文中的the Sphinx就是“狮身人面像”的意思。在希腊神话中，sphinx（斯芬克斯）是一个狮身、有翅膀、头为女人的怪物，她用缪斯所传授的谜语来让人回答，回答不出的人就会被吃掉。这个谜语就是：今有一物，同时只发出一种声音，但先是四足，后是两足，最后三足，这是何物？出于这一典故，sphinx一词在英语中还可以解释为“难于理解的人、神秘的人”。
