On July 17, the third lecture of the "2020 Lectures of Labor Relations upon Returning to Work while Fighting the Epidemic" hosted by our school and co-organized by the Labor Relations Branch of the China Human Resources Development Research Association was held online. Professor Pan Shiwei of the Department of Labor and Human Resources at the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan was invited to give a remote online lecture entitled "Challenges of Taiwan's Labor Market Under the Impact of COVID-19: Problems and Responses" as a guest speaker. Professor Jiang Ying, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and director of the Academic Affairs Office, attended and presided over the lecture. More than 100 experts, scholars, teachers and students from inside and outside the school listened online.
Professor Jiang Ying expressed her gratitude and appreciation to professor Pan Shiwei for his wonderful lecture in her concluding remarks. She pointed out that we have gained a better understanding of the current situation of the labor market and response policies in Taiwan under the impact of the epidemic through this lecture. She believes the lecture is very attractive as well as effective, of high quality, and resonates with the audience, and that discussing topics of common interest with the help of "Internet plus" technology is both novel and meaningful.
In the lecture, professor Pan Shiwei introduced the changes and impacts of the labor market in Taiwan under the epidemic, shared the local government's countermeasures and measures to deal with COVID-19 from the aspects of labor security, employment security and social security through ample case studies, and put forward the thought-provoking and discussion-worthy issue of whether the protection of workers' rights and interests should focus more on employment security and social security in the future.
In the discussion sector, Professor Shen Jianfeng, dean of our law school, evaluated the effect of the lecture from different perspectives such as comparative research method, market concept, risk concept, division of labor law and the coordination and three-way mechanism of social security law. In the interactive sector, associate professor Li Aoguo of the School of Public Administration of our university, professor Jiang Yue of the law school of Xiamen University, professor Zheng Shangyuan of the law school of Tsinghua University, professor Cheng Yanyuan of the school of labor and personnel of Renmin University, etc. discussed with professor Pan Shiwei on topics such as the role played by Taiwan's trade unions in the epidemic, the proportion of unemployed undergraduates in the epidemic, the labor security of health care workers, the respective responsibiliteis and functions of labor law and social security law at different stages of development, and the demands on employment and social security.
Professor Pan Shiwei, Ph.D. in industry and labor relations, Cornell University, currently works in the Department of Labor and Human Resources, Chinese Culture University, Taiwan. His research expertise includes labor relations, collective bargaining, labor policy and legislation, international trade union movement, international human resource management and corporate social responsibility. He studied labor movement for many years in his early times, and after returning from his studies in the United States, he held a trade union position and participated in the operation of international trade unions. He has come to our school many times to hold lectures and courses for teachers and students.
