On the afternoon of June 19, 2010, at the invitation of the School of Labor Relations and Human Resources, China University of Labor Relations (CULR), Chris Tilly, Professor of Urban Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Director of the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, gave an academic report titled "How National Mechanisms Determine Job Quality in the Retail Industry in Different Countries." The seminar was chaired by Qiao Jian, Director of the School of Labor Relations and Human Resources.
Professor Tilly first elaborated on the convergence and divergence of the retail industry and the reasons behind these trends. Based on his comparative research from three different perspectives, he conducted a detailed and vivid analysis of the above issues, explaining his research findings from the supply and demand of labor. In conclusion, he stated, "Different countries' institutions, market structure, and cultural differences lead to strategic variations in the retail industry."
At the end of the report, Professor Tilly exchanged views with the faculty and students present on a series of labor relations issues occurred recently in China. After a thorough dialogue, both sides clearly understood each other's viewpoints and attitudes.
This report once again allowed the faculty and students present to gain a deeper understanding of the cutting-edge ideas in the field of labor relations research. The exchanges between Chinese and foreign faculty and students also broadened everyone's perspectives on analyzing and researching issues.
