On September 15 and 16, 2010, Professor Joseph A. Harris from the College at Old Westbury, State University of New York, upon invitation, attended the 2010 "China Trade Union · Labor Relations Forum - International Conference on Labor Relations and Trade Union Responsibility in Economic and Social Transition" held by the China University of Labor Relations (CULR), and gave an academic report titled "Ideological Challenges for Union Leadership". During the conference, President Li Deqi, Vice President Shen Qinqin, and Director Wu Wanxiong of the Foreign Affairs Office exchanged opinions and views on the theory and practice of trade unions in China and the United States with Professor Joseph A. Harris. The two sides agreed to conduct exchanges on the basis of fairness, mutual respect, and seeking common ground while reserving differences, and reached consensus on cooperation issues. Both sides expressed their intention to strengthen cooperation in information sharing on the development of China-US labor relations, exchange visits of labor relations experts and scholars, academic exchanges and discussions, and reference to American labor relations textbooks.
