On the evening of October 27, 2009, at the invitation of the School of Labor Relations and Human Resources of China University of Labor Relations (CULR) and the Labor and Human Resources Research Branch of the Chinese Sociological Association, Dr. Kiu-Sik Bae, Research Member and Director of the International Cooperation Office of the Korea Labor Institute, held an academic seminar titled "From the Fierce Struggles of the Korean Ssangyong Labor Union: Theoretical Analysis of Korean Trade Unions" at CULR. The seminar was chaired by Associate Professor Qiao Jian, Director of the School of Labor Relations and Human Resources, CULR. Some teachers and students from the CULR attended the seminar.
Dr. Kiu-Sik Bae's presentation started with the 77-day SsangYong Motor Company strike in South Korea starting on August 3. With the labor union theories of South Korea as the main line, he talked about the challenges facing the labor unions of South Korea, the origins of current issues, the history of the labor movement in South Korea, and the future development direction of labor unions in South Korea. Dr. Kiu-Sik Bae's highly academic presentation received rounds of applause from the audience. Professors Feng Tongqing and Xu Xiaojun provided comments on the presentation.
During the subsequent discussion, Dr. Kiu-Sik Bae further answered questions about the reasons for South Korean workers going on strikes, the labor dispute resolution system in South Korea, the influence of Korean history and culture on its labor movement, and comparisons of labor union models among China, Japan, and South Korea.
