At the invitation of the Center for China Studies, National Taiwan University, Professor Feng Tongqing paid an academic visit to China’s Taiwan Region from December 14 to 21.
In China’s Taiwan Region, Professor Feng Tongqing visited experts and professors at Shih Hsin University, Academia Sinica, Chinese Culture University, National Taiwan University, and National Chengchi University, and listened to their introduction to the history of labor movements in China’s Taiwan Region, the historical relationship between labor studies and labor movements, the composition, differentiation and integration of trade unions and labor organizations, labor law research, and their impacts on economic development and social changes in China’s Taiwan Region. Then, they discussed the international and cross-strait labor and social issues, investigations and research on the implementation of occupational injury laws, women's labor issues, and social practices of university students, etc.
During his visit to National Chung Cheng University and Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Feng Tongqing delivered academic speeches on the topics of "Labor's Evaluation on Chinese Mainland Reform" and "Review and Evaluation of the Past 30 Years: Theoretical Research on Social Issues Related to Labor of Chinese Mainland", and participated in the seminar on "Research on Trade Unions, Labor Relations, and Workers' Health: Academic Exchange between China’s Taiwan Region and Chinese Mainland" at National Cheng Kung University.
Furthermore, Professor Feng Tongqing also visited some trade unions and labor organizations. He was deeply impressed and enlightened by their efforts in promoting the first autonomous legislation for workers, official follow-up on social organization consultations for labor laws, the role of some trade unions and their leaders in resolving social conflicts, the coordination by local labor affairs service associations in resolving nearly 80% of labor dispute cases through mediation, addressing new challenges brought by globalization and social transformation in China’s Taiwan Region, and the desire to understand Chinese mainland's social changes and learn from relevant response strategies.
During the visit, all parties reached intentions of further academic cooperation through discussions.
