The academic seminar on "Labor Relations and Labor Conditions under Globalization", organized by the Center for China Studies, College of Sociology, National Taiwan University and the Graduate Institute for Social Transformation Studies of the Shih Hsin University, was held in Taipei on September 18, 2010. The seminar conducted multi-angle analysis and discussions on various issues in the field of labor relations, including changes in labor systems under globalization, government policies and actions, labor relations and labor safety, review and prospects of labor studies, labor rights, labor conditions, and changes in labor relations under globalization. More than 20 scholars from the CULR, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, China University of Political Science and Law, Capital University of Economics and Business, and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as well as scholars and union activists from universities in China’s Taiwan Region, including Shih Hsin University, Academia Sinica, National Chung Cheng University, National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University, National Cheng Kung University, and Tunghai University, participated in lively and in-depth discussions on the above topics.
Professor Zheng Qiao from the CULR participated in the seminar and delivered a report titled "The System and Practice of Collective Bargaining in the Chinese Mainland" during the conference. She also exchanged views and communicated with the participating scholars on the theoretical and practical issues of collective bargaining in the Chinese mainland.
Scholars from the Chinese mainland submitted papers covering the workers' conditions and research in the Chinese mainland, the fate of Chinese workers in globalization, actions of trade unions, the system and practice of collective bargaining, research on the working hours system in the manufacturing industry, analysis of enterprise labor disputes, comparison of the damage to labor rights and action choices of two generations of migrant workers, analysis of channels for rights protection of migrant workers in Yiwu, etc. Scholars from the China’s Taiwan Region addressed issues such as youth employment, worker participation and occupational safety in the Chinese mainland's transition, the working class in China’s Taiwan Region from the perspective of social sciences, market characteristics and labor conditions in science parks in China’s Taiwan Region, globalization and labor welfare, etc. The seminar showed the high attention and in-depth research of scholars from the China's Taiwan Region on labor relations issues in the Chinese mainland. Through comparison, exchange, and communication between the two sides, everyone deepened their mutual understanding and knowledge, and also expanded channels for extensive, lasting, and in-depth academic connections and communications.
